Run, Don't Walk, Away from Strayer University

Pros – The best part of Strayer was helping good students who wanted to work hard and succeed at school and life. If I have to name a pro, it would be those few good students. Faculty mean well but are 99% adjuncts, powerless and clueless. Operations staff are mostly sweating through mandatory weekly, sometimes daily meetings to meet enrollment and retention fantasy goals. A bad campus culture is a trainwreck, and a good campus culture will be ruined by psychopathic regional managers and faraway, out of touch corporate people who are beating a 120 year old horse to death.

Cons – Campus staff are dedicated in the short term, but no one can stay motivated and effective with the schizophrenic regional management, who have gotten significantly worse in the last 3 years. Strayer talks Jack Welch Management "principles" but practices the opposite. Regional management, especially in academics, are frightening in their lack of basic competence and willingness to lie, gossip, devalue and derail their campus staff. Google the concept of "relational aggression" which sums up Strayer regional management completely: Female, bullying, backstabbing, and undermining. If you suck up, you get used and abused. If you stand up for yourself, your students, your campus... watch your back. Since October 2013, Strayer has axed 20 campuses and 20% of the workforce, and it has become a nightmare. Strayer enrollment (like its stock... check STRA) is dropping like a stone, and this is one dead cat that ain't gonna bounce.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company.

How about dropping a dime on Strayer with your local newspaper? If you email me (email above), I may be able to find a local journalist who might take the story.
