After an audit, the state of California determined that FactSet needed to put its California freelancers, all of whom are editors of financial transcripts, on its payroll. This is usually done because the state determines that the company using California residents as freelancers is making a profit in California and therefore needs to pay taxes to the state. It's only fair. In the spring, all freelancers were told they'd be put on the payroll. Then a letter came a mere few weeks later telling all of us that we were being let go. Why not do the right thing and pay the taxes you owe the state, FactSet, and keep those of us working in California? We had to test to get the position and we were required to at least hold a bachelor's degree and have extensive editing experience or have an advanced degree.
