The University of Texas plans to cut its workforce by approximately 500 jobs in the coming years (2014 and forward), mainly through retirements and attrition.

The Austin American-Statesman has reported that the move will save between $120 million and $140 million over 10 years. The job cuts would be focused in purchasing, personnel, finance and information technology departments, according to a draft plan obtained by the Texas State Employees Union.

The university has an administrative workforce of about 12,000.
