Leigh Valley Cuts

In September of this year (2013) we announced closing of the Valley Distribution Center (Hanover Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania). If I remember correctly we said we’ll be letting up to 500 people go, it’ll be a phased layoff, we’ll keep folks through holidays and then a big hit will come sometimes in mid to late January and would last thru March. The center was a busy one, we had it open for over two decades. Many of us who were involved with the Leigh Valley DC knew this was coming, initially the center was busy and now it’s working one shift only, so that’s usually the first sign that things are not going well. There are few other centers in the region that are not running at full capacity, so moving operations there kind of makes senses. It’s horrible for all friends and families that for decades depended on the wages the Center paid. The hope is that some folks will find replacement jobs in store and @ ProLogis Park, but I’ve heard that it is difficult to find replacements. I did not hear about severance, I am sure the HR will follow whatever was promised as we were bringing folks on.
