University of Louisiana at Monroe officials have announced the elimination of five administrative staff positions and an upcoming cut of up to 30 positions at the university.

ULM President Nick Bruno said the reduction in workforce, announced Wednesday, is a result of continued budget cuts and the need to lessen the university’s dependency on restricted funds.

“It’s a very sad day where we’re being forced to take these measures, because when you reduce an entity like a university and you have to dip into an already stretched faculty and staff to make ends meet, it hurts the whole region,” Bruno said. “We’re really bare bones at this point.”

According to the university, the five positions eliminated Wednesday were the director of admissions; the budget accounting and reporting specialist; the assistant director-Title IX coordinator for human resources; the director of purchasing; and the senior information technology specialist.
