Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small general store in 1930 in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Today' employee-owned Hy-Vee chain operates over 230 grocery stores and drugstores in Illinois, Iowa (home to approximately half of the company's stores), Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company distributes products to its stores through several subsidiaries, including D&D Foods, Lomar Distributing, Perishable Distributors of Iowa and Florist Distributing.
