In 1957 Jack Crawford Taylor founded Enterprise Rent-A-Car (then called Executive Leasing) in the basement of a St. Louis car dealership. Five years later, the company started its daily car rental operation with 17 vehicles. Its business model catered to customers who need a replacement vehicle because of an accident, repair or theft. Enterprise is now the largest car rental business in the U.S. (by sales, employees and fleet), and has more than 7,700 rental offices serving local neighborhoods and at airports worldwide. In 2007, Enterprise expanded into the airport rental market via the acquisition of Vanguard Car Rental (National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car). The company continues to be owned and operated by the Taylor family. In August 2011, the company spun off its fleet management business as a separate company.
