Quick question about upcoming reviews. How do you earn the “EE” rating? I’ve been one of the hardest working people in my store and have excelled with customer service numbers, yet never get above “ME”. I asked my manager and she said it’s only for people getting a promotion. Is that true? I also heard rumors that SM’s are discouraged from giving that top rating out. So how do you earn the top ee rating?

I was a manager in the corporate office and was told that EE is "not to be used". I was told it was basically a carrot on a stick - dangled out there to entice staff to perform at a higher level, but always just out of reach. Even if a manager did give that rating to an employee, it would be overruled at the senior manager or director level. As a manager, I always felt the review process was ridiculous. I would submit evaluations of my staff to my manager, then it would go to the department director, and then to the department VP. By the time the "approved" review made it back to me, it had inevitably been downgraded by people who had little to no daily interaction with the person who was being reviewed. It's nothing more than a formality they go through each year because they have to. They already know going in what they are paying out in raises/bonuses, regardless of performance. So basically, they ask staff managers to identify their strongest and weakest person, and everyone else falls in the middle. The strongest person will get maybe .25% more than the others, but not the EE designation. Even if they did allow it, it would not equate to more $$$.
So then how does one qualify for a rating higher than “me”? If it’s just managers discretion, and if the DL/RD will fight any ratings given to employees higher than “me”, then what chance do employees have? FYI... I am not complaining, nor am I trying to start anything. Just trying to figure out how I can work as hard as I do and yet never get above “me”?
First, EE isn’t the “top rating,” OP (outstanding performer) is currently the highest. I do the reviews with my PM & the DM rejected them because we had 1 “EE.”
What cvs is doing is promoting mediocrity. They are discouraging managers from recognizing standout people by making it very difficult to give out EE. If you as a manager feel you have someone who deserves EE you shouldn’t have to explain yourself to the DL. Why promote people to manager if you don’t trust their decisions?
They use a curve so that they come in on budget in every store. The budget id based on a % approved by LM. Each store can really only have a couple EE's an a couple NI's or DME's. The rest need to be ME as directed by the Regional.
For many managers it appears that it’s just easier to give everyone “me” than to try to justify why you gave out one or two “ee”s, so they take the easy way out! Nobody wants to have a conversation with their DL.
The problem with that scenario is what if someone actually deserves ee but you can’t give it out without screwing someone else’s raise? Typical cvs, trying to keep everyone down...
SMs are not really discouraged, but you do have to defend your choice pretty hard, because the DM swill push back.
Also because you have a small budget to work with for raises, giving a EE basically means you have to take money from someone else. Say everyone is budgeted 2.5%, and the minimum for an EE is 4%, that means you have to take 1.5% from someone else’s raise, or 0.5% from three peoples raises to make up for it.
If you’re a top store, you could ask your DL if you can go over budget, but then he has to take budget from another store, so it’s some big asks.
People shouldn’t bash someone simply because they don’t like the question being asked. Not all managers follow the same standards, and so not all managers will give out ee as easier as some might.
It's not what u think ,it's what your boss thinks of u . Ive given meets and exceeds . Read the definition of exceeds ... it actually says you may exceed in some areas but not overall . This is stupid ,just the fact your on this site leads me to believe you stir the pot from time to time.
Is there any way to fight a review if you really feel you deserve better? Or once it’s in your too late?
If my store did not exceed expectations, no one gets an exceeds expectations. If it did, then I look to the colleagues who provided the best service, are the most dedicated to my store, and who work the hardest. This year I have out 6 exceeds. None of them are for someone getting a promotion.
ONE of the problems with this is entire company is we have nearly 9000 store managers not following the same standards for much of anything. Not all our fault. The company is a cluster F from top down.
Is there a certain standard to meet to get “EE”, or is it manager discretion?
I do know sometimes the staff feels like they do a good job and may be doing what they are asked but the store results do not warrant say 5 exceeds expectations and the pharmacy manager or store manager will be challenged by the DL.
That's a lie. About 3 or 4 employees from my store have been getting EE every year and they weren't getting promoted. It has nothing to do with promotion
I got EE every year but the last 3. Basically I was the DLs fix it pharmacist and would turn stores around that were under performing. Back then, it was easier because we actually had help and some corporate support. But those days are long gone.
