Thread regarding Walmart Pharmacy layoffs

Pharmacist, laid off in IL

I have over 25 years as a pharmacists, I’ve spent last four with Walmart here in Illinois.

Yesterday, I was told there is a mandatory meeting that I had to attend. During the meeting I was told that a computer system (????) selected my name for a layoff, that my position is being eliminated. I was reassured that my performance had nothing to do with it and that this was based on computer calculations.

Needless to say, I as in utter shock. I am the only one providing for a family of six and you can imagine what kind of impact this will have on us as a family.

They also told me that I will have two months to find an equivalent position and apply – maybe I’ll get accepted. If that does not pan out – I am out… Severance will be provided, but with pharmacists jobs disappearing quickly, finding a new good paying job will be very hard.

Times have changed. A few years ago, you have a pulse you have a job anywhere. Hospital, metros, wherever - whatever you want. It was like "quit today, work at another pharmacy tomorrow" - but not today, it's rough out there...

Illinois (Northern suburbs close to the border of Wisconsin) = 1 pharmacist and 1 tech

It's so unstable this is becoming very ugly very fast.

In our store we have pharmacy students doing APPE rotations, you can imagine how they feel as they witness this mess...

The part I do not get has to do with record profits, I mean we've never done better - every metrics is up - on my pharmacy level, store level, sector and the company level - EVERYTHING IS UP? I do not get it...

I work in Phoenix, AZ and we lost one tech yesterday. I was talking to my manager today and she said that we should be OK (read safe) for now. It's difficult to be a pharmacist nowadays, no matter where you work - they are focused on cost cutting, automation, etc. I do not think that much emphasis is being put on the customer/patient/care - this is all fine if cost is the only thing in the equitation - but we all know it's not that simple.
