It's all about future business. Both Raytheon and UTC are putting all of their eggs in one basket.
Scramjet/Ramjet technology. Before the merger, UTC and Raytheon with DARPA were doing R&D. This was in the open news. Right after that, the merger was announced. So, if they can integrate into enough products it might keep them going as the new RayTech.

Usually, putting all your eggs in one basket doesn't go well.

You can't rely as much as you do on the defense sector. Having a commercial business tied in will balance the business out. Its typically a very profitable sector.
