Just a question that keeps popping up in my mind. I couldn't manage to recall. Have we really executed all of this that is happening as something normal and usual, up to a point where layoffs are a normal state and mass layoffs are never too surprising? Not sure we can do anything about it, but on the other hand is we let them make us believe that this is a normal state of affairs, then we practically told them that they can do basically anything to us and we’ll get used to it. It’s just sad.

Stay away from automotive-related STEM careers if you can't handle cyclical industries. Others like Healthcare, Aviation, IT, Software are all better options to apply STEM-related degrees. Ford has been like this forever. They've fired people periodically since at least the 80's. Those were bad. The great recession was bad for all companies and employees. This is good. Ford is being proactive and getting ahead of next recession. Maybe they've learned. 90% of the cuts are overseas where Ford is not doing well at all. North America is a big money winner for Ford. Wish they'd build more in the USA now.
The problem is also competition, there was a time when ford, Chrysler and gm where the only players. Now this is no more, every oem moves at breakneck speed to get the products out as fast as they can. We are just a tool in the box and nobody cares where that tool comes from either. Note: This same thing is happening inany industries.
Tell your kids to STAY AWAY from STEM careers. This is how they will be treated.
At Ford???
Every year for the past 5 years there has been a task. Some larger than others.
This is one of the bigger ones.
They also seem to coincide with UAW negotiations. IT IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. They need fodder so the the UAW sees that salary have already been cut. This makes is easier on concessions.
The business plan indicates hourly reductions are forthcoming...they just dont know it yet...
American STEM workers have to compete with the world. “We need the best and the brightest from around the world” they preach to us. (The best and the brightest stay home with their families so we get the mediocre and a few malcontents who can’t make it at home.). America doesn’t need strong backs and nimble fingers. So, companies don’t have to compete for American STEM workers, and our compensation and work situations suffer.
