Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

DOS

My time at DOS at the end was just misery. They tried to preach that Take Hold Of Your Career or whatever that BS was called, but then threw up roadblocks to stop you. I gave up on it. Then there was a layoff at least once a year. Those who were left were expected to pick up the slack but you never could keep up. I was also a part of a layoff. I had already started looking though.

When unemployment looks better than your current job, that may mean something is very wrong. I think my layoff saved my sanity. I know they have had at least 2 more layoffs since my departure, so who knows what the atmosphere is like now. I do not miss it one bit.

Be prepared to have Burks secretly observe your recorded sessions and report negative feedback to your immediate supervisor. She also critiques your appearance.

A 90 minute live session each week will be required for all online classes starting in July.

I'm curious about the 60 student online class with the a 90 minute live session each week. Yikes! I heard that the 90 minute live sessions were for the "hybrid" classes where a few students were actually taking it, or attempting to take the class, in a classroom setting. Is the weekly 90 minute live session now required for every online class?

Does DeVry have the nerve to ask faculty to give individualized feedback? they used to, even 2 years ago. Do they still ask it of faculty with 60 enrolled in a class? Full-time faculty cannot give individualized fee back to 180 students...can they?

Let's also remember that DeVry Adjunct Faculty employment is "tentative" with no guarantees of classes, no benefits, no tenure, no career advancement, no raises, and is decided every 8 week session based on arbitrary criteria and faculty member's willingness to be abused.

I was just given an online class with 60 students for a pay of $2400.00, no TA and no assistant instructor. Devry is expecting 90 minute live sessions each week in addition to discussion participation and grading discussions/papers. If I were to give DeVry the time for which they are asking, I would spend about 20 hours per week on a class of 60 students for a total of about 160 hours for the entire class, and the pay works out to $15.00 per hour. Needless to say, I am not reading the posts and am not giving individualized feedback. If a student makes three entries in a weekly discussion then they get an A and it doesn't matter what the entries are, I don't read them. If they submit a paper then they get an A and it doesn't matter what the content or format is, I don't read them. DeVry is completely out of touch and 100% corrupt at this point. It is sad to say but being a greeter at Walmart or being an Assistant Manager at Burger King pays about the same as teaching for DeVry and you do not need any education or experience.

"DeVry brings out the very worst behaviors in students and faculty."

That's something that should be said before a House Committee.

I quit. If I hadn't, I'd be traveling (as many of my remaining colleagues are) 4-5 hours to a campus in another state. I hear that fewer faculty and adjunct faculty will be teaching more students. I left when 40+ were enrolled in courses that should/need to have been capped at 20. Now, those courses will have 60 enrolled, with faculty making long commutes, having to prepare forced 90 minute lectures deployed to a few live students and an online cohort monitoring. I worked to exhaustion to give qualitative feedback to 120 students. It is impossible to grade 180 students. Ergo, grades do not matter. And to achieve the (required) 3.6 student evaluation, inflation is rampant.

DeVry brings out the very worst behaviors in students and faculty.
