Cobra is not affordable, essentially it's a joke of an offer.

The company sent information about COBRA , severance pay, etc to each employee , as their store closings were announced. This was during the time Shopko believed it was just going through restructuring. What it has failed to do is information its employees that once the entered into liquidation as a company, all bets were off. No insurance, no COBRA, most likely no severance pay. Interesting enough, while the health coverage they paid into was cancelled, the employee cannot withdraw from the dental and vision plans we're pay for out of our own pocket. However, that insurance will not be offered through COBRA either. So use it if you can. Unfortunately, I'm paying for a dead horse, since the insurance will no longer exist when I'm eligible for my next exam.

If a company closes its doors, the health plan ceases to exist. No health plan, no COBRA for laid off employees. However, if the business closes its doors immediately, the health plan often ends at the same time. At that point COBRA would be available from the closing date through the date insurance premiums are paid.
