Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Give up on age discrimination

I see this issue raised over and over again as if nobody knows it's happening. It is. Everybody knows it's happening. But don't expect anything to change because everybody knows about this.

Remember that article a while ago that put together actual evidence that IBM was laying people off based on their age? Everybody was talking about it, it was all over the news... And what happened? It faded from everybody's memory within a week or two. Without any consequences for IBM. Nothing came out of it.

So yes, there is age discrimination at IBM. It'll continue. And there is nothing we can do about it. Deal with it.

‘Deal with it’ doesn’t make it right. I left 3 years ago, took them on and got a settlement (not for age discrimination even tho it blatantly was). Giving into it is just naive and living In blissful ignorance until it happens to you for whatever reason. The positive thing is it’s the best thing that happened to me as now much better off financially and less stress. Actually getting meaningful pay rises and performance bonuses too. Working for an employer that respects experience and work life balance and invests in your development and wellbeing . What are you all waiting for? As an HR person once quoted years ago, ‘there are no bars on the windows but yet nobody is leaving’. Now there are no packages there is no incentive to stay which is by design. Take care of your own future and make your own decisions - dont wait in fear of the grim reaper - life is better out there, trust me!

Give up on s-xual discrimination and harassment too while you're at it.

Too hard to prove someone grabbed your backside in the lift, just let it go.

Good advice OP

Ginni is older than I am. Why is she still there?

No. Just because the fight will be long and difficult, and will likely not be fixed in time to benefit those of us today, doesn’t mean we should cave and give up.

@YihuYku-rls: Proving it is next to impossible though, so like it or not, the OP has a point.

Age discrimination laws are there to protect older workers. You might argue how effective they are, but that doesn't mean employees should just "deal with it". Thats just foolish and stupid.

IBM is hiring on the cheap, so that means young and dumb.

It is a way of life in this big IT companies that can no longer grow their top line... There is life after IBM no matter what age you are. Look at IBM Business Partners, they will be glad to have you. At the end of the day, it is IBM's loss and some other company's gain.
