Seems like they are counting on ones fears that it’s impossible to find a job at another company and that’s why they are not shy to cut one's hours. On the other hand with cut hours it gets very hard to survive, and aren’t we just wasting our time working just a portion of our time for a portion of our pay when we could be working at another company? So, for me this is a big dilemma. Opinions???

@ 8pcc:
!. Assuming you really are a WM store manager (your vernacular strongly backs that claim, but in the information age it's not hard at all to fake anything you want on line), I think I speak for most of us here when I say, your supporting any and all actions by WM is both expected and unimpressive.
- Your consistent theme is that employees can maintain full time-ish hours----as long as they open their availability. Come on. We both know that's not only unfeasible for most but impossible for some, what with child and other dependent care needs. Other companies provide assistance with those needs. Walmart? Coachings for not abandoning children over working posted shifts.
I too had 15 years in with WM, so I can speak to a multitude of details and issues and general realities of this retail giant, both on the hourly and salaried sides of the coin. ...... Know what I concluded from those experiences?
I'd rather be a dung farmer than return to Walmart ~ ~ ~
I am 15 years with the company. Current position store manager. Started as an hourly position.
In my entire time with Walmart I have never heard or been giving direction to scare or intimidate an associate.
With the wage increase, I have not seen a cut of hours in correlation to that.
I did lose people greeters, but gained a new position with an additional 100 hours.
When I read these posts about full time
People only getting 15-30 hours it doesn’t add up.
What is your availability?
How is the store running core hours? I’m thinking maybe if it’s not availabilites they may not understand core hours is not the only hours available. ..
Popular belief is that stores cut hours so the management team gets a higher bonus.
This is just not true and naive for anyone to believe.
This qtr I have about 122 hours less than I had previous qtr. (hours are given by qtr months ahead of time.). So to my associates it may seem like a cut. But 122 hours is pennies on the dollar to the store profit plans.
I scheduled to 108% demand for the year last year. That means over my hours. I ended the year at 107% profit.
Now 122 hours across the chain is a major saving to the company but for one store it’s barely noticeable in relation to store metrics.
Most of my issues are the associates not wanting to work when we need them. That’s fine, we will however hire someone for those shifts.
So if I need weekend cap2 coverage, I will hire. However, the person I hire I will not force to only work weekends. That means other hours will come from another associate essentially. I can have 100 cap2 people but must stay in demand of hours for the week.
We have a schedule to customer demand. My store, I have plenty of hours that need to be filled but find associates with 8-15 hours a week.
Why? Because they don’t want to close, or work a Saturday or in this department or whatever the case may be.
True availability was designed with the thought to make it easier for associates. Unfortunately, associates take advantage of us signing all availability forms now and the. Get upset when they don’t get scheduled.
Monday-Friday 8-5 hours are gone. The hours are there for people who want them...
That is true. I'm in California and we qualify for partial unemployment. One of the only things good about living here!
Partial unemployment depends on your state.
If your hours get cut enough you can get partial unemployment. Several people in my store are getting it due to severe cuts. It's not as much as working 40hrs but helps none the less.
It is true WM management preys on their employee's fears and insecutities. I have friends who are/were salaried management for that vile company who have described to me, in creepy detail, some of the closed door meetings and what senior management directs them to do. How they're encouraged to 'mildly threaten associates' to 'boost their productivity' under the flag of 'this is the key to YOUR bigger bonuses'.
This company truly believes they're above all social reprisals and legal sanctions because, to a very large degree, they are. WM has such a literal army of lawyers and a limitless legal budget that, for 99.9% of all employee-based complaints brought against them, no single lawyer nor even law firm will touch them....and the remaining .1% they simply settle.
It's a numbers game, and they always win. And even if they don't win, they make the loss a tax write off.
