Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

This is how the number of associates is determined

Here is what I was told by a co-manager a few years ago regarding why we were always running on so few people: the number of associates is determined by sales, not the size of the store. Our store is 210,000 sq ft, but we barely have 320 associates. We have the most foot traffic of any store in our state, but 60% of the customers do not work, so sales have been stagnant for years. He told me the only way the company will allow us to have more associates is to increase sales. Not gonna happen at our store. I have seen one store that is 179,000 sq ft that has 560 associates, but they do about 28 million more a year than we do. Our shelves are not getting stocked and customers aren’t happy, but somehow it’s our fault. LOL

For those who were curious about this like I was, I'm moving it from an older thread to the top. OP is @XNsJZaa-sflv.

They schedule according to sales, not according to the work that needs to be done. Bottom line is, they're asking their workers to not care. Don't care if it doesn't get done. Don't care if its not right. Your check will be the same whether you finished that reset, paperwork, stocking, folding clothes, cart of returns, etc, - or not.

To add to my earlier post, our store has always been a revolving door of new people. The funny part is that we’ve hired people who can’t read very well, or do basic math. I almost got fired when I was a lead because people were plugging. If you can’t read you can’t stock.

Wow! 320 associates. Where do they hide? On a good day at Walmart you might spot 10.

Hmm. A tough delimma. The knee-jerk response is, 'duh---more help = more sales!' But if the store's core demographic is impoverished and/or on welfare/public assistance in a state that's already budget strained and is, itself, cutting $$.......well.......this doesn't bode well for the future of your store. I'd be updating my resume'.
