Does anyone think that something like that could happen soon? Maybe some people won’t agree with me but I tend to think that that would be more fair than the current strategy of a few layoffs here, a few there and people being overworked to the point that they leave on their own.

ISD just had layoffs again.
GBS has layoffs today
Walmart are laying off jobs. There plan is to close more than 200 stores this year. Plus the stores we have is going slowly to all self check outs so there a lot of jobs lost. I know this is a fact cause the stores around me all have only 3 - 4 checkout lines and rest is self checkouts. Me personally i only go though check out lines cause that saves there jobs. But if there are no cashiers i don't buy anything and walk right out the door. Few weeks about i had 2 buggies full of food for a cookout. I know probably $300 or more there but since they where no cashiers, I push my buggies to the side and left them a note on it for them.
I don’t think they’ll do mass layoffs going forward. I believe they will purge expensive employees via the rank and yank process.
I think that you're definitely spot on about the layoffs in small numbers. At the home office, it's been rather quiet. Merchandising displaced a few senior directors around the 1st week of January, then logistics the 2nd week (unknown numbers), and then realty had single digit displacements in the 3rd week. Last year's local news report (Jan-Feb 2018) from NW Arkansas stated that 1000 associates to be laid off from the HO in two phases: 400-500 in 2018 and another 500 in 2019. But thus far, no indication of any major lay-offs, nothing in the local news. Perhaps the company's execs decided in order to not bring too much attention, maybe they made the decision to displace associates throughout certain timelines this year to include closing a few stores here and there. Under the radar approach.
I want to say thank you to each of you that work in our stores/clubs. You all deserve better! Best of luck to you all.
I think they will keep doing small layoffs and store closures so they don't get a lot of bad publicity.
Mass layoffs are gone, replaced with hpc. Coaching are transfer to the new systems. the manager determines the level and gives the associate a time line to improve. No pics. Severance plans were mentioned but are determined by he at the home office.
Don't forget, if you jump thru all the hoops they still will only let you use 80 hours of sick time. Gee I wonder why they made it basically impossible to use... Don't preach to us about ethics after stealing nearly a BILLION dollars worth of sick time from your best most reliable employees. Most crooked unethical company ever! I'm glad to hear some are looking into a class action lawsuit, the only thing that might wake this company up is a major lawsuit on the front page news...
Agree, its not about compassion, its about profit. What a joke. They want to get rid of long term employees. A Market Manager joked about long term people who are in the "192 Club". For those who don't know, it means those long term associates who have accumulated 192 hours of sick hours but cannot use it until all PTO, PPTO and Personal time is gone. Only then can it be used for a sick or injured family member after you get an approved LOA (for Full timers). Really? Is that respect for the individual? Joking and sneering? OK so much for respect for the individual. This company isn't what its "portrayed" to be. Its time associates fight back, email our CEO and let him know all the things that go on at our stores. Favoritism, approving absences for those who are WAY over the limit of 5, but dinging people who come to work everyday and rarely call in. This kind of stuff goes on everyday. Shameful isn't it? Then they get rid of PC/TC's and tell them they have to reapply for their jobs, that this new People Lead job is not guaranteed to either of them. Really, way to slap them in the face, and kick them when they are down. you are right. Its about PROFIT, not people. Shake my head everyday.
The new HPC: Accountability is the way they will layoff who they don't want and reduce workforce. This is real and this is happening April 1st. This way they won't have to pay severance before they restructure to a "Greater Workplace".
@ -dts: Yep, I've personally witnessed that. An assistant was just completely run through the wringer; bar constantly set juuuuust a biit too high for him to reach, but everything looked good on paper......so he not only failed to keep his career, he had no unemployment insurance claim defense. It was some sick sh!t to watch.
And they probably don't want to pay big severance packages. Instead will put people on the PIP plan and set them up to fail. Another way of cutting costs.
They won't do that for the same reason they'll let you work your whole shift before firing you: they want to keep productivity high. This isn't about compassion, it's about profit.
