I was told that is mandatory to work Sunday mothers day's it appear that the store needs the ASM in order to survive a busy day.

Sounds like a district thing. I choose to work all holidays and most weekends and I close two nights a week but it is not required. There are ASMs in my district who never close, never work weekends and rarely work holidays.
It is required for all managers except SM to work Sunday in my district as per DM
not mandatory but many managers will have asm there as it is a busy day
