Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

No support to learn

Staples screwed up big in that way. They kept people on in dying tech roles without any support to grow / learn, add skills and then when things changed, those people had nowhere to go. Of course people should be motivated to grow themselves too, but Staples did a really terrible job of meeting employees half-way (few training opportunities, barely existent tuition reimbursement, etc)

Perfectly stated, @YOwyo3B-3ebt. A lot of companies make sure to invest in their best and most loyal employees, they make sure to provide them with opportunities to improve themselves. Staples simply didn't care. Which is why we are where we are.

"Don't blame your employer for being stuck in dying tech. In IT it's your own responsability to learn new skills and if you are stuck in a dead-end job you should apply somewhere else."

I agree to a point, that's why I said "Of course people should be motivated to grow themselves too". And it is why I have left jobs at different companies. Any job that railroads you into learning skills to be used in that job only is a job you should leave ASAP.

But hiring / onboarding new employees is expensive. Keeping employees motivated and able / willing to improve skills is a win-win. Also, even with generous opportunities available, you seldom see super high utilization rates for tuition / training reimbursements. But those that do, hopefully use those new skills to do their jobs better, and those that don't are still more likely to feel supported.

very devious, pay people fairly well in rolls that have no real value anyplace else, they are trapped until sent to the unemployment office
