How long before being able to start a new job?

I'm not sure how new employment works in regards to severance - is there a time frame that has to pass before a person who has been laid off can start working at another company? I mean, without risking their severance package? Is there any limitation or no?

I can confirm that I have tried over many years to get internal positions in different countries or board areas. I have never been able to be selected or interviewed. It seems that all these internal positions are posted purely from a compliance point of view while the job has already been assigned to someone. So, "networking" is critical for survival if you can practice such "art".

I also tried applying to non-yet-posted positions and having some conversations with senior management. It led to interview-like meetings but again to no formal job offer.

Best approach to progress: leave the company, get a job outside (hopefully with a promotion) and if you really really want it, come back to SAP. You will jump 1 or 2 levels and it will be faster than internal promotion.

Otherwise, use the "diversity" card if you can (female, millennial, etc)

I was lined up for a good internal role, but the role was new and the HR team couldn't get it posted before my final day date. So -- that means, I'm now effectively excluded from interviewing, because I am "external" and have to get L1 executive level approval to be considered.

What a headache for the hiring manager! Couldn't get the job posted quickly, and now cannot easily consider the very person/people who know the role/team/solutions best. I get why they do it, but it's laughably inefficient for everyone except HR.

How Long until you take another job???

You cannot take on another job until after your exact termination date in the US. Unless of course it is under the table pay with no W2 forms required. Most who were laid off in US were given some severance that should help with living expenses in the short term. You are also probably eligible for 6 months of unemployment insurance providing you worked 4 quarters (file the day after your termination date). This is a frightening experience for people who never lost a job. My advice is to not move too quickly just to land a new job. Make sure its the right fit and do your homework. You are still very valuable to many employers with SAP on your resume. Take your time, breathe and stay positive. BTW, the job market is excellent in the US so do NOT undersell yourself out of fear of being unemployed.

The smart thing to do is take a job with another company before you leave here.

It is all about politics my friend ... I am sorry to hear that you missed out on the opportunity with another team but you should know that most of these positions are already accounted for. Unless you are well connected, you don't have a chance with these positions. Posting them is just for show and to mislead the applicants by offering them false hope - very disgusting business practice. I am sure you are aware of the 2-year wait period once you are laid off (not eligible for FTE or C-user positions). Good luck in finding another position outside of SAP.

It is in very fine print. Once identified, you are flagged in the system. I have another opportunity with another team, but I am not given the position.

This exercise has become an act of vengence.

Why we do not bother about id--ts who never contributed for any product?

Line managers who never planned the people development?

Product Managers who work only on excels?

HRBPS who do not understand the culture?

Your diligent HRBP should have explained to you what the restrictions are when she presented you the package. You should ask her and make her earn her pay - it is part of her job to help you. If you review the package carefully, there should be some information in there also. I've been there so I know the situation is very stressful, I wish you the best!! Good luck!
