Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

"Walton credits the instant success of Walmart to his associates....."

Here is a quote from the recent Readers Digest story about Walmart -

"Despite many competitors doubting his business model, the company started to grow and grow. Walton credits the instant success of Walmart to the low prices, but mainly to his associates. They gave customers a positive shopping experience and kept them coming back."

Walton credits his ASSOCIATES for keeping the customers coming back......This is something the current leadership needs to remember - or better yet read about because NONE of them worked with or for Mr. Sam. I have yet see a robot thank a customer for shopping the stores - Also there is no one at self checkouts to thank you.....

1gec nailed it. There are plenty of Sam Walton stories out there. Plenty. And not all of them are him being a nice guy.

Walton's 'giving generosity' and 'compassion for his employees' was much more a product of the times he operated in rather than any milk of human kindness from him personally. His wife Helen is also credited for the Associate Stock Purchase Program, and that was a great move, but the fact is it wasn't to help the associates at all----it sent the WM stock value through the roof! Win-win for all, but again: not a human interest move.

If Same were here now he'd be no different than any other One Percenter in the game. Guaranteed.

Sam Walton toured Asia, lobbying state governments and Congress, and was THE guy who opened the floodgates of cheap low quality c-ap onto American shores. Remember the Whitewater scandal? That was a little piece of real estate that the Clintons (Hillary was on the board of directors) and Walmart wanted to set up as a free trade zone for our Chinese friends. No single person was more responsible for outsourcing of American jobs and the destruction of the middle class than Sam Walton. That's his legacy.

Unfortunately Sam Walton is dead and so is all the ideologies he worked so hard for. The associates are now considered liabilities rather than assets to the company. So sad to see happen. I understand things change, as they should, but losing the core beliefs Sam stood for is a crying shame.

@YEViOTt-gro - i guess you obviously don't get the point of the op's post. Walmart associates are what make the store function - If you don't have associates to take care of the customer you don't have the sales necessary to run the store hence you need to cut payroll - which in turn reduces your customer service even more - it's a downward spiral - Hire enough employees - fill the stores with merchandise and the customers will come - for those that say the future is online - it is still just a small blip on the overall retail landscape......not everyone has a computer or wants to order from their phone.

Purchasing power and inflation Mr Walton. If a walmart associate was making $18/hr in 2009 and hasn't had a raise since in 2019 due to inflation that $18/hr is reduced to $14.70. Using 2% inflation each year. 2010 is 18- (18 X .02 = .36) 17.64 . That comes to $14.70 due to inflation and loss of purchasing power. Now if Mr. Walton cuts you 10% 18 X.10 = 1.80 . That 1.80 does not come from from 18 but comes from $14.70. That would leave you with $12.90. Have a great Day
