Splitting the CEO and chairman roles?

This article considers the move of splitting these to positions, that the roles of the CEO and chairman of the company are not united in the same person, to be a logical and a good move and the author is wondering why Culp hasn’t done that already. I was hoping to get some other thoughts on this?

Consolidation of duties removes internal checks and balances, and it did create an autocratic monarchy under JI. Separation of duties will reduce LC’s clout he needs to execute vigorously and speedily and may breed infighting and resentment. Ultimately, it comes down to who the King is as a leader: a greedy despot or a benevolent yet strong ruler beloved by his subjects. Regardless, BOD’s role is to keep him/her well grounded. The kingdom is where it is today because the knights feasted with the King nightly and chose to ignore what laid beyond the moat.
