Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Question

Since H1 is designed to get talents that aren't available in US. why don't they layoff those people first before US citizens(with same skill level as H1s) ?

Nothing against H1 holders, Just common sense

If i were to take a SHOT IN THE DARK....

1) LEVERAGE:

H1-Bs generally dont have as much LEVERAGE as their US-citizen counterparts.

That (counter-intuitively) gives them more VALUE in the eyes of their employer.

Employers prefer workers that they can exploit. (Anecdotally, i feel H1-Bs put up with More BS than i would)

2) Compensation:

Take time to read/learn about a H1-B LCA document: Labor Condition Application.

Basically, it dictates WHAT the employer MUST pay the worker.

it varies state by state, county by county, job-sector by job-sector... but it's probably LOWER than what the Employer is currently paying their US-citizen counterpart.

3) Cost of Ownership:

In order To hire an H1-B worker, you will find (often times) that the Employer paid the EXPENSES associated with the Sponsorship (application fees, lawyer fees, etc). I'm talking Thousands of $$$ here; per worker.

The employers probably see that as a LONG-TERM investment.... it makes sense that they are hesitate to write-off (chop) their investment so soon.

YOU, on the other hand, were hired straight off the street.

There was no "added" expense when bring you aboard.

Who do you think is going to get the AXE first?

Hope this helps!

@1lpn that generalization does not hold water. Anyone who claims one demographic is better than another has little life experience. It may be true for a small subset of the demographic you describe. How many of those cheated thru their school years and beyond? The well documented wide scale corruption and cheating negates your assertion. YouTube is filled with H1B testimonials describing how they are forced to return to home as fresher H1B replace them in the workplace. They describe the system that is in place and how the placement firms defraud US companies and other assorted fraud. My heart breaks for those individuals.

Ford has a knack for picking up H1B that fit the Ford culture, that being said, few are the cream of the crop. The H1B are no better than any other demographic at Ford.

The Ford blue dollar budgets are different for H1B For whatever reason Hackfat is currently not trimming that budget.

The fact of the matter is that H1s are the best and the brightest. They were #1 in their middle schools. Then they had to compete with 10,000 other #1s to become #1 in their high schools and colleges just to get out of their country. Visas are very limited. Every step of the way if they stumbled, their dreams are dashed, and they're left with nothing, and many of them have been struggling with the hopes and fears and debt pushed upon them by their families their entire lives. And when they get here? Often it's culture shock. A language they no, in a country they don't know, in a curriculum they don't know, and they've got to maintain their grades and compete with all these other #1s all throughout the world with 4.0 averages for 90,000 slots or go home. Some years these slots are filled within 24 hrs. These guys are smarter than you. They're better than you. They work harder than you. They're more desperate than you. And they know it.

Not related to my job. Lack of creativity and experience is what makes me question keeping them and laying off more expensive experienced engineers.

If you find that you're position is threatened by a bunch of wet behind the ears college grads who aren't even three years out of school, you probably needed to get laid off.

Because, in the name of sponsoring their H1Bs, they pay a lot less to the individual. Oh and the H1B sponsorship comes out of a different budget....so management gets a discount on the H1B employees in blue dollars. It's a shell game. Come in under or at budget and the LL2 on down get a bigger bonus.

Ford needs to fix their internal funding structure. Until then those that make the most are the most in jeopardy. Sad but true.

Oh and Hackfat gets the biggest bonus of all. Sickening.

Mexico graduates more EEs from college every year than the USA. And walk into any top grad engineering program. It's majority Chinese and Indian faces, and what Americans there are in the crowd are probably the children of former H1s. That's just reality.
