Maybe I'm oversimplifying the whole situation, but it’s a fact that almost all of the laid off employees were not management of any kind, but “regular” employees. How the hell can trimming the number of those who bring actual value to the company and keeping the ones that don’t be beneficial to the company in any way?

You are over simplifying the lay-offs. Many levels were impacted. For US, although there was attempt to mask, an obvious criteria is age.
In our region, unfortunately many managers were canned but the staff were spared. But the criteria for selecting which manager to can is not transparent. One manager I know was spared but he lost all his staff so now he has become an individual contributor.
Good Bernd is out
Bill, Gerd and Kleinmeier should also be out along with their cronies
That will infuse fresh outlook to the management of SAP
Its futile to have engineering staff alone attacked so
And it's an attack!!
I personally know a VP who was hit, as well as a bunch of managers. At least one Sr. VP was laid off in San Ramon.
I am a manager and I was canned. So ya, you are oversimplifying. Also, we -the good ones - actually work.
