Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Can’t believe they are doing this to the employees

My supervisor called me on the phone to come to a conference room. My manager, female HR for my dept, supervisor & security were all seated in the room. My manager read a script about how my position was eliminated, he appreciated my work & was so sorry. I sat there in shock. My supervisor went & grabbed my purse. I wasn’t allowed to go back to get anything in my office. The HR rep & security escorted me to the parking garage. I was given a packet of private documents to review. If I wanted to accept the severance package, I had 10 days to review, sign, & accept. My office items were mailed to my house 2 days later.

Found this to be a sad example of how loyal employees are treated. I get layoffs but do they have to be done with such humiliation. The original poster is @Y1MI0sP-1rvx

Thank you, Megaseis. I'm making a bit less, but a lot happier post Devon. Have less expenses now that the kids are grown and on their own. Hope you're doing well also.

I was released during the last round. It was a shock but i was working relatively quickly and now that i’ve adjusted, I’m thrilled to be far away from that pressure cooker. And oddly enough I really like ‘The Brute’, he was dignified and professional. There isn’t a good way to break that kind of news.

Megaseis, the Devon layoffs of 2016 were probably kinder and gentler, to avoid bad press.

I was part of the many smaller layoffs that took place throughout 2015. I was not kidding about the muscle bound HR brute. I still have his business card. Don't know if he still works at Devon, or if he's currently working somewhere as a bouncer? My layoff experience at Devon was crude compared to others.

"Can you tell me any other way they could do this?"

If it happened, is happening nowadays, as the OP states, then it sounds like the 2016 layoffs in February were more dignified. It's never a great feeling to get laid off, but nobody escorted me out, we were allowed to go back to our desks, nobody told me I had X amount of minutes to leave, people had time to say goodbye if they so wished, and it was just generally a decent way to get laid off, if there is such a thing.

I would imagine the Feb. 2016 round was the first big one in Devon since the 2009 batch, so DVN could bother to treat us half-way decently, or at least in my personal experience. If it makes any difference I worked downtown, and I don't know how things went down in the field offices.

I'd guess the process little by little got c-appier as time passed from 2016 to now. The experienced people in both management and HR must have had more experience and were able to muster up empathy for the folks who were getting laid off. Sounds like those type of employees are all gone now.

When Chesapeake have layoffs, they gather everyone in that building in one conference room in the basement and let you know.

They could have hearded us all like cattle to the auditorium and then hired Bob Barker to call us out like wheel of fortune... Come on Down! don’t forget to spay or neuter your pet!

SOME...of the Devon layoffs were a little more gracious than others.

Exactly like they did the lay offs in 2016

There were not any security involved, just manager/supervisor and HR rep. They take your badge, then given an hour to say good bye and leave.

Surprised they didn't sent a robot in to deliver the bad news

At least they don't can you via video conference, like in the movie "Up in the Air". Or do they now?

That’s why some seasoned doodlebuggers left or retired on their own in the past. Some things never change when it comes to layoffs.
