Do we get overworked to the border of our possibilities, do they hire cheaper youngsters, will they hire contractors? It’s hard to figure out given that the layoffs are happening worldwide and that various departments were hit.

My manager just assigned me 4 extra tasks on Friday after the layoff of our other regional branch in the US. And guess what, I'm still getting paid the same. I'm going to do the work on a priority sequence and will let the work pile up. I will not put in that extra effort just because some people got laidoff. They can lay me off as well if they want to and pile on this work to someone else.
