1st sorry about the stress you went through with your ill parents and sister.

Your story is totally different because you had a valid reason to be a bit late , leaving early or trying to scheduling appointments.

I have seen people who have no valid excuse and show up 10 minutes late 2 times a week, take a 75 to 80 minute lunch instead of the valid 1 hour lunch.

Stopping work to answer personal cell phone calls and texts.

@XpdXpZs-1zpn Your post is very sad to me and of course many people do have family obligations but it sounds like they are abusing the system if in reality they are spending a lot of time on the phone, etc. As a former employee of State Street, I always tried to keep my personal life private and during my time at State Street lost both of my parents and my sister who was also very sick of course. When my parent's were sick many of my co-workers were aware of this fact but I still believe that it did not influence my work performance. My sister was sick for most of the last seven years that I worked at State Street and I didn't confide in anyone but went to work and only took time off when it was necessary. I do recall that some of my peer's would complain when I took a day off but they had no idea my sister was dying from cancer and I needed to take her to her chemo or radiation appointment.

In defense of the person who is on the phone constantly hopefully they are working from home when they can to complete their assignments. If not they will probably be the next one laid off.

Just my take on it and yes your co-workers or peers could have a lot going on in their personal life that you are not aware of.

Its all smoke in mirrors. Most people run around like they are so busy when in reality, they are just frantic because they spend half the day on the phone doing their personal stuff and dealing with their kids' issues. I sat next to a person who literally spent each morning scheduling personal appts for themselves and their kids, talking to their spouse, parent(s), lining up landscapers to get quotes for lawn care, taking to old facebook friends, you name it, their morning was spent on their own stuff and then after lunch they sifted through the paperwork they had to do and then around 3:30pm it was back on phone talking to their kids and scheduling soccer games car pools. It was nauseating. These types of people are being paid to do very little for the company.

Some departments are not as busy because more of the dept work is being done by the people in India.

But I do know of departments where the workload has doubled and tripled.

Not many of these posts make any sense to me. With all of the layoffs and offshoring at State Street I can't imagine how you are not busy.

If you and your group are very lucky, they might offer the mgmt job to one of the senior workers.

Or they may bring in a boss from another dept who was going to be let go, but their salary is lower than your former boss.

I have no direct reports and can get my task done by noon. I’m a VP. I’m 49. I’m sure I’m going to get laid off.

I am over the top busy. Work 10 hour days at least. However pretty sure our team is on the next list. Statestreet only cares about their bottom line. Quality of work and client satisfaction is not important to them. Making money is, while we all figure out how to put food on the table and send our kids to college. Meanwhile in India, the live like royalty.

Just file all your work in a neat and orderly file so your replacement can do the work.

Our department pretends to be busy. We have a group of 7 and 2 could easily do all the work. Been this way forever.

Hours and a half for lunches, 45 min coffee breaks 3 or 4 times a day.

Personal calls all day long.

No one cares.
