Thread regarding BNSF Railway layoffs

2019 layoffs

BNSF is about to rollout PSR in 2020. Just when I thought it wouldn’t happen here. Sounds like we’ll have two major US railroads real soon. RIP

Sad to see. Production is key in psr. But so are carloads. Less stops longer trains. Good luck.

At NS in mechanical department the stress and overall tensions are high. No one knows what will happen next or where.
It’s getting difficult to watch the younger people stressing out. It is bad.
I’m not worried that much but I have seen good people laid off and I’m afraid that it will happen again.

If the BNSF does actually roll out a PSR plan, then you had better brace yourselves. I'm a former CP and UP employee that experienced the PSR disaster, and I lost my job twice. My railroad career is over. I will not go back to a railroad ever again. The unbelievable stress caused by PSR is worth it at all. Please consider your options and start thinking about where you'd go if it happens to you. The UP is doing it right now, and its beyond ugly. The UP has gutted it's personnel down to just a few, closed many locations, and has continuously lied to the remaining employees. Do not believe your union will help you, because they won't. That's why I wasn't surprised when they told me to leave the property. That's the exact same thing they did at the CP. I literally saw it coming. I've moved on though, and actually found a way better job. I have almost no stress, my manager isn't staring through a scope to see who they can pick off next, and it's much closer to home. Pay isn't as high, but it's worth it. So to you BNSF folks, please don't let your guard down. If you start down this PSR path, then remember these simple ways. Trust no one, believe nothing you heard, and just do your job. Always expect the best, but plan for the worst. PSR is an ugly path with a lot of bumps, but like anything else it'll come to an end. Hang in there!

At least the BNSF is semi insulated from investors. Take a look at the other coast, where the CSX and now NS are eating their own. They only hope for NS employees is 2 actually merge with BNSF, because of the far superior culture, unfortunately for BNSF employees is that cuts the other way 2.

The Railroad isnt a secure line of work anymore. They are all about increasing profits.

Just a former UP electrician, now furloughed. We lost guys with 10 years. Unions didn’t or couldn’t do squat. Best advise, protect your own butt and brush up on certs, quals, and resume/interview skills. No matter what lie they told us to keep up the production there was nothing we could do to protect our positions. It’s all about driving up the stock price and making tons of money for the share holders.

If it happens to you like it did for us, you have my condolences. Time to prepare.

I hope you guys don’t go down that road. My RR is going through it now and it’s not pretty. Constant small furloughs ever month for the last 4 months and I’m sure I’ll be in the one next month.
