Last time, I escaped lay off by hiding in the rest room on the lay off day. HR could not find me until end of the day. They got tired looking for me, eventually fired my colleague who was easily available and working very hard.

I avoided layoff by find a better job that in addition to slightly better pay had a life balance an environment that respects weekends and evenings with BOUNDARIES.
Come on, we all know that story is a lie. There is no way HR would be looking for anyone except for the remote encounter on the way towards the elevator and out the door by 5 o'clock.
I have friends who were on vacation. Married with children. He got laid off by phone call. She returned to her office Monday, where she recieved the news.
Has nothing to do with finding you. They'll send a letter if need be. Or just stop paying you.
The turrets idea sounds like a solid winner of an idea. In fact I bet that would work if you did it well. Let's all try that.
I got the call, can you come to confrence room xx to discuss a reorg. I came in, apologized right away and told hr rep i have been recently diagnosed with turets. Lets just say, i let the "turrets" fly. They left crying and couldnt finish the exit process.. Im still here...
