Are all the direct reports to someone who got laid off next in line to be cut?
How will next boss know who worked hard and who didn't?

Yep they will bring in somebody for you to train, and you will be lulled into a false sense of security thinking they are hiring more help.
Then according to how well the person learns the job, you will be dumped within 6 to 9 months
This happened to me. They moved me under another manager and it was right before raises and bonuses so I got screwed ... he of course was more loyal to his other reports he knew better.
I did not get laid off myself just reported to some one else.
They usually have you report into another manager until they figure out who in your group can be laid off. Sometimes they cut everyone after you tell them all the important stuff and then they hire cheaper and younger to do your job.
