The Art Institute of Pittsburgh closes
Closure effective Friday, March 8
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh has closed, according to Dana Melvin, regional dean of student life.
Melvin confirmed to Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that the closure is effective Friday, March 8.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education confirmed in January that the Art Institute of Pittsburgh intended to close its doors for good on March 31.
"This decision was made for a number of reasons, including significantly declining enrollment," said the Art Institute's owner, Dream Center Education Holdings, in a closure plan that was submitted to the state.
The school says it has 230 students at its Penn Avenue campus in the Strip District, and 1,924 more who take online courses. Students will be able to complete the current term by the closure date.
Displaced students will have the option to transfer to another Art Institute or "partner institutions" outside the system, according to a letter included with the closure plan. The letter did not name any partner institutions.
