Why would good engineers want to stay at Qualcomm?

Seriously, why would they? Good engineers always have options at other companies, and why would they, in their right mind, want to stay at a place where they will always feel unsafe?

If you feel unsafe it's because you realized your function/team has lost value in the org. Technology moves fast, so does your job. All the ongoing problems just accelarate this.

I moved from Q to one of the so called big companies. . the culture in every big company is bad, add to it the stress of living in silicon valley with no affordable housing, traffic and general overpopulation and you start to wonder why anyone would move to these tech centers. Now lets come to talent, i would say in wireless (modem) and silicon, (cranking out a top of the line snapdragon) Q is still cream of the crop, execution in spotless. Yes there are some bad teams and little top heavy in few of the teams, but in general it is not that bad. what we need to really improve is our business team ...which i hope they do alogn with some exec shuffling to change the image na d don't be surprised by the number of boomerang employees who head back to Q. similar happend to MSFT..

Trump will make sure Obama's FTC will lose this case. Government is on Qcom's side. U.S. will not risk China getting ahead in 5G no matter how useless you think it is. Stock price will shoot up soon after.

QCOM is the best place to build up diverse skill sets and knowledge. I will stay here until I experience all aspects of engineering and business practices, and so on. Later I can create much more creative work than doing from FANG.

working with bleeding edge technology is a reason. best pay and benefits. FAANG can’t hold a candle to Q expertise. proof is market cap OP.

I AM one of those Managers that do not have those so-called transferable skills, BUT I control your life and you are not in any position to do anything about it .. so put up or shut up and move on. Spouse of a current employee here - one who has worked at startups during a previous boom in SF and at least one other (former) tech giant at the start of their career. Not everyone can easily up and move their life (home, spouse - especially a working one, kids) for another area when that area is Silicon Valley.

The economics of scale in raising a family there is crazy - housing, lessons, education is considerably more expensive. Many areas aren't family-friendly. Long commutes.

For all the posters who have up and gone elsewhere - good for you. For the posters who judge others who haven't - your POV isn't the only POV out there.

But seriously, none if these are great places. Q is the leader, IMO.

A startup would be attractive question to ask instead. And if you know some, go ahead and share. Ampere comes to mind...anything else? They aren't mobile but they are ARM based, so sort of related...

At any rate, all of these large companies have scale issues, every company their size has scale and innovation issues.

They all outsource and regress to the mean, you see all this India this and offshore that...its just manage dollars and not innovation. That isn't a knock, it is the reality of any big business. Its how they operate and they will freely admit and recognize their place in the market and there is a need and they fill it.

They all, also, eventually acquire startups because they have the ability to act innovatively and then turn to the large companies who can scale it with their large corporate machines...

In otherwords, you are just deciding between one large corporate machine or another.

So, whether or not you decide to stick with one or the other is probably more of a life, location, personal decision than it is technical merits of the corporation you work for or the simple "why wouldn't you" work for another company style question that has the air of inflated sense of worth surrounding it...

So pop that balloon and have a good time back here on planet reality.

The reality is that most of the good talent left some time ago. What you have remaining are either unskilled "managers" or the people who have spent their careers brown-nosing said "managers".

Most the remaining people couldn't get through the interview process elsewhere.

Years ago, you had some of the brightest and best engineers at Qualcomm, but the environment became too toxic. Now it's tons of people afraid of returning to their terrible countries.
