Think they will target smaller numbers of folks to avoid the story that mass layoffs are in the process at WD nd tat that will go on until the next bigger wave is announced. Am I just being paranoid or is that a likely option, cause in my head it makes sense?

This is the absolute worst company to ever work for.
I'm a former contractor (Irvine). I must say that after reading a number of these threads, I am so glad that I was not offered regular employment. I was laid off once before (during the HGST merger), and I have no desire to go through yet another layoff (I have no doubt that I would have been hired, only to be fired some 3-6 months later).
Stay paranoid and have an updated resume at all times. Record your work at WD for your portfolio because getting it later will be impossible. Just read that an entire software development was laid off yesterday. Small waves are less costly for the company. I was there during the 40% lay-off of personnel & it was a pathetic experience. The company is run by engineers, not people who know how to make money. Good luck to you, however.
