Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Why would anybody quit?

Somebody said execs want attrition and are encouraging it - okay, I can see why that's a good thing for them, less money to pay out. But why would anybody leave voluntarily amid ongoing layoffs when severance is a realistic option?

Even those who were planning to quit, in my opinion, should be putting it on hold until this whole thing is done.

I agree. I was laid off in the big one a few years ago. Best thing ever happened to me in my IT career. I got 11 months of pay and I was working in 30 days making only a little less. As a bonus I don’t have to worry and stress about layoffs. Devon energy has offered me 2 jobs since leaving and I would never go back.

If your career isn't joined at the hip to oil and gas, there are plenty of good opportunities in OKC.

Because if your years of service are low, you are under 40 yrs old, and you don’t get restricted stock then there’s no reason to stick around just for a couple of weeks of pay and a prorated bonus. Start interviewing now before you’re competing with the 360 others who get laid off in March.

One good reason is to get ahead of the wave. If you are in a market with limited opportunities, less competition is better. There can also be a stigma associated with being laid off that can hurt your job search. On the practical side, stay and milk it for every penny. There are also people who get laid off and then campaign for others to quit so they can somehow feel better about themselves.

Because going to work miserable every day is not worth it! Manager and leads actively seeking ways to push buttons to set you off and then play victim, some even taking a code of ethics complaint against a lead and person making the complaint retaliated against. So yeah, walk away was easier than "showing out"
