Thread regarding DST Systems layoffs

If you’re over 50, been laid off and having a hard time finding a new job

Its not because you’re old. It’s because you are most likely difficult to get along with in the workplace and you’ve made a bad name for yourself, people talk, companies call colleagues at other companies to check you out before they even extend an interview. So quit blaming it on age, it’s because you’re an a$$hole and no one wants to work with you. Look in the mirror and there is your problem.

Two of my friends that got laid off and we’re over 50, found new, better paying jobs within 2-4 months. One is now an SVP (was a VP when he go laid off), the other found a VP level job at a much better company and a way better salary.

So I refuse to believe that if they lay a 50+ year old off it’s because of age, no it’s because you are a toxic, difficult person to work with and word spreads fast when you get laid off, no one wants to hire toxic people.

I know someone who has been laid off twice in two years because they have a horrible attitude and blame everyone else for their inadequacies and shortcomings. They hate being corrected about anything and think the world owes them.

Over 50 A$$hole? - Well, if this “a$$hole” worked for the company for years and for some reason developed a negative attitude maybe a critical conversation is needed.. Youre seeing the reaction - what is the cause???

I got out a year and a half ago.

The best thing you can do for yourselves is reach out to all of your friends who found jobs outside of that s***hole, have them ask around where they now work, and use your contacts to find yourself a better position.

After years of layoffs and having your benefits cut, I'm not sure why anyone still with DST/SS&C thinks they're doing the right thing for themselves and their career.

I wonder if the original poster is referring to themselves. This statement is toxic, prejudice, unprofessional, unnecessary and inaccurate. I find it hard to believe that you would know the reason anyone is terminated.

Training yourself to be tolarent of ill-concieved ideas will only lead to the lowering of your own intelligence. If you are afraid of being let go then you need to leave. Its scary but nothing compares to the weath of knowledge you learn and share at a new company. Being let go or leaving a company forces you into the unknown, if you are intelligent you will come out better off in the end.

Yup. Most people I know that are over 50 and got laid off, were laid off because of poor attitude or were unable to deal with stress in a professional manner. They treated their direct reports or coworkers poorly and often lost their tempers.

The number one thing a company will not put up with is someone who has a bad temper and has anger issues. You can basically do a sh--ty job, mess up 100 times, but if you are an angry employee, they will get rid of you because you are a danger to other coworkers. Seen this happen to 3 people over 50 who were just angry all the time and could not take any correction wrt their work or ideas.

For some people, getting old makes them bitter and just more angry.

If you value your job and want to keep it after age 50, always have a smile on and never lose your temper. And never send a nasty email, that is the best way to ruin your career.

Some of this is true some is assumption. Don't confuse those over 50 being scared they cant find another job and those over 50 who have to find a different job but cant because of the facts you mentioned. Scared employees are the easiest to manipulate and most over 50 are scared. Doubting your value because of age is an easy habit to fall into. Each day that passes this company becomes less valuable to valuable employees no matter your age.

When people blame age for their being laid off you know it’s because they are a lazy, problem employee. Lots of smart, professional, creative people work well past age 50 and are highly productive and good leaders in the workplace. Most of my managers have been over 55 and taught us younger people lots of good stuff.

I agree. These people usually have huge egos and you can never give them constructive criticism. So they are usually the ones that are let go so they don’t infect the rest of the office with their bad attitude.
