Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

My team is only hiring new grads and new grad H1Bs

My team is only hiring new grads and new grad H1Bs, and experienced (senior/staff+) engineers are walking out of the door left and right. Eventually it's going to be just new grads running around with barely any training. How sustainable do they think this is?

Intel has been doing this for years, works great.

Experienced engineers understand that this is NOT the place to be right now, so they don't apply. Would you?! New grads are clueless in this regard so they still apply. None intend to stay more than 2 years though.

Why dont you guys being it to San Diego union tribunes attention ?

Union Tribune are well aware but are essentially in Qs pocket. Look at their technology/business journalist, he only ever publishes super super Q friendly articles. When they rarely touch on H1Bs its all about how tough it is for Q to hire qualified peeps and how H1Bs allow them hire "the best of the best". Righty-o then !

Have you guys walked around the UCSD campus recently? The demographics have changed since the 90s.

The problem is managers value a piece of paper (masters) over the ability to communicate, problem solve, and assimilate to US culture and business practices. The majority of the h1bs cannot problem solve because "their bachelor's degree programs" are not as rigorous. There is no ABET accreditation in India. After they get a US masters they are finally techanically on par with a US grad with a bachelor's degree.

What gets me, we send back h1bs for 9 months to India because of visa issues. Qualcomm pays them a US salary for 6 months while they live in a 10x cheaper city and country. How does this financially make sense, Qualcomm?

For few positions that were opened some time back, it was pretty rare to get US applicants. One of the problems is the influx of h1bs with masters that outcompete normal bachelors. Sometimes the extra investment is not worth it for the type of position and team you get. There is more interesting work out there, perhaps for lesser pay.

All our new grads are H1Bs. Bizzare. Not a single US citizen ! Where do all the UCSD grads go ?

It leads to experienced, high performers leaving and going elsewhere. They see it. They know whats going on. Dont want any part of it, so leave for something more honest.

Personally, think it is neither wise nor sustainable, but it seems that's the trend. Any other opinions? And please, no racist or ageist comments, otherwise, site admins will remove the whole thread.
