This looks to me more like a demonstration of force aimed towards the competition that something that needed to be don at the moment. I mean come on, the first one wasn't even commercially deployed and how things stand a commercial application of 5G is not that close.

Everybody in wireless industry knows 5G is a propaganda to fool cellphone users to feed the industry without any technical essence. It can't compete with WIFI within short range economically, and can't compete with 4G in long range in physical stability. But what can wireless communication workers live on without it?
Need to establish it’s already here to beat public outcry of radiation hazard concerns.
Good company with fading vision for years needs better glasses. May be they should venture into eye glass business now. Qeye.
Chips are now like toothpaste. Needed but with plenty of options. One can squeeze it till the last drop i.e use the phone while it's still usable , not a fashion any more. DL/UL Speed and feature are good enough to have a quality life.
Qwhy5G ?
Such poor leadership at Qualcomm. Back in the race to 4G days, and before that, we were so much more nimble, focused, well guided. Now we have executives who lack leadership and vision.
5G is a commodity that will have per chip profit margins similar to WiFi, otherwise no one will adopt it.
Q doesn't have the structure to make money in that market. When 3G is dropped Q will not be able to command the same patent pricing as it can today.
Q meds to reinvent itself the way Mav did when they went from computers to phones.
Other competitors will have more advanced 5G modem showcases in MWC 2019. So Q have to demo a paper victory or totally lose face.

Initial solution was not an integrated solution, built as a data modem to show leadership. The next solution is integrated for handsets, both are at a high price point. Your point is a good one, will QCOM tier down for mass adoption and see margins diminish similar to 4G. Expect a lot 5G BS next week as the company has nothing else to talk about.
