we see especially majority of the times only contribuitor and senior developers are getting axed . This is not correct . why not tech leads, principals and above .

I agree with your post . In Indian office it is quite common. Promotions and layoffs are very much biased .People who work hard get nothing and people who talk more and go behind managers get more benefits and promotions
Well. If any forced layoff would target my team, most probably I would want to keep the best people. And looking at my team it would mean cutting associates, then contributors and a senior or two. If the changes would be more severe or someone would tell me who to fire first - I'd quit.
As long as the team is well managed - people at higher posts usually perform better... if not - fire the manager and his director 😁
There are multiple reasons. Some of them are more rational, some a little bit less... 😜
People at higher positions usually have more experience and that means also knowledge about all the weird solutions delivered in our company. Firing people with less experience means smaller losses in the domain knowledge. On the other hand - the mess we are right now - also originates from the more experienced people, as they took part in all the bad decisions 😅. Still - our company is so diverse - even looking at one site, not to mention different countries - that I don't think Your statement is correct.
