I found the following article (link below) about workplace stress instructive. It is probably a safe bet to perceive that workplace stress is a major factor at UOP given its challenges. Stress is the enemy of productivity and morale. The question of course is how can it be reduced? If the survey highlighted in the article is accurate (and I believe it is), then the answer to my previous question is from or at the top. As Pope Paul 3 observed, “a fish rots from the head down.” It is not bottom-up. Any meaningful change has to begin with Management. And at UOP as with many organizations that is a very arduous and adversarial proposition. And most of us already know the number one factor in employee turnover is bad management. People voluntarily leave because of the boss, more so, than any other factor, including compensation. Given the huge numbers of bad bosses at UOP,
stress must be rampant and overwhelming, morale non-existent, and with the vast majority of employees planning to leave. This is not a formula for a viable turnaround strategy or even sale. What it means is continuous erosion and decline. Management is either ignorant, indifferent, or duplicitous. How long can this continue? Most campuses designated for closure will teach out next year, so my bet is, that, if there is a sale it will happen in 2021 or so. If no sale, UOP will shutter its doors by 2025.
