Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Robot janitors

Think that this is more of a move an advertising move rather than something that will cost a lot of people their jobs, but symbolically I saw this move as a display of the process of Automation that is going on for a while now. A lot of people are losing their jobs, due to new technology being deployed. Workers feel that this process in on the way every day in warehouses, distribution centers, transportation, and of course in stores. Think that we need to prepare for the radical changes that this company will go through as more new technology is presented.

If there are no people in the store to help you, why go in? These days you can shop online and they deliver to your door.

It's simply too cost-ineffective for robotics to do all janitorial work, or it long ago would have already happened. Same for dept. stocking and backroom scanning; there's probably always going to be be need for at least some people doing that.

As for cashiers being replaced by self-scans, yep. Get used to the concept. I'm personally all for it.

Salaried management? If that's you, get those Indeed and Monster resumes updated. Walmart has been long top heavy with you pay roll leeches. ... Hear that gurgling water sound up ahead? Your kayak is headed for the toilet bowl swirl-ey.

I won’t shop at a store that only has self checkout. I hate that c-ap.

Cashiers will be hit the hardest. It'll take about 24 months to play out.

The first wave was traffic lights replacing cops and mechanical switches replacing phone operators. The automation ship set sail long before you were born.

I see it as the first wave. Getting people used to the automation so that more can be introduced. Any job that can be robotized, will be. Walmart just needs to now make the aisles wider so that the robots and scooter carts can both pass. Or make skinnier robots.
