Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

More layoffs yet to come in the new year

Union Gas held its last town hall of the year. The outgoing president made his final address to employees and in it he stated that it was the people he had worked with at UG that made it such a success.

The EVP made her remarks and it was all about the bottom line. Of course she had to show up and there's a reason she's unliked (she should have stayed in Toronto as she's clearly out of her depth). People love working for Union Gas because of its values. When senior leaders talked about respect and integrity they really meant it.

The Enbridge senior leadership is all about how we can screw the last penny of our employees and suppliers. They keep citing safety, integrity and respect but they don't mean it. Just more corporatespeak delivered in a fake voice to demonstrate that they care. They only care if it impacts the bottom line.

Too bad corporate greed will ruin a great company. That's another reason why Enbridge will not make Top Employer because they are not best in class. They had to take over Union Gas to learn about best practices because they had none.

Yes, that terrible efficiency will be our downfall

As a formal Enbridge employee, I noticed terrible efficiency everywhere, a lot of wasted headcounts. It's a place for pre-retirement. You would not see this happening at other high performance or results driven companies. Many people may not like being laid off or seeing the culture changed, but that's how the company can become stronger and the remaining staff can benefit from the changes.

That’s my hope as well. I may be biased, but I wouldn’t underestimate the power of the Union Gas leaders (of all levels) to change things, as long as enough of us make it to the other side of Q2.

Completely agree on the differences between Enbridge & Union....I’m an Enbridge employee. One positive we can hopefully work towards is the union senior management continuing to lead by example and hopefully that influences some positive change.

I was let go with a spotless record and unbroken years of above average performance. I got along well with management and bought into the corporate culture. In the end, none of that mattered. I was in my 40's and too expensive to keep around.

Do not make the mistake of thinking it can't happen to you.

I’ve heard AM say that the employees who have been laid off were let go due to poor performance.

I’d like to know how AM determines poor performance because, in my opinion, some damn good people have been shown the door.

Enbridge never used to be like this. Honestly before AM took the reigns, people enjoyed coming to work and I truly had worked with some of the most passionate and intelligent people I have ever known. Most have now left either of their own accord or from one of the multitude reorganizations. Times have changed and I can see future MBA students use us as a case study on how quickly a company can lose its culture and prominent standing from a series of poor executive decisions.

Bigger is not always better. I sincerely with the board would interview the regular workers (middle management and below) to truly get a pulse on what is happening. The fact that AM still has a job tells me that everything they hear is spun and watered down.

Union Gas has never experienced a take over by another company on this level. The same thing happened when IPL bought all of Consumers Gas, which was much like Union Gas, a well organized effecient respectful place to work. When they took over, name was changed to Enbridge and the push towards bottom line performance started. But that is now the way of the business world and there is no going back. All the gripping and complaining and wishing for the old ways will never change the outcome. Been through it and over time no one cares. Sorry but the future is now here for Union Gas and the past is gone. Enbridge rarely discusses or promotes the 170 year history of Consumers Gas. Like it never happened and quite frankly is not important anymore.
