Thinking of leaving

I'm really close to accepting an offer and giving GE my two weeks notice. Any ideas what kind of process am I looking at before I'm free to go?

I left GE last summer, best decision I could have made. Leaving was super easy. Send a note to your manager and HR manager and youll get a quick checklist. Sit around a couple weeks and take off and you'll only think about GE and this website when you want to remind yourself what a toxic and bitter environment you left.

Don’t think about it.

Just go.

Go to onehr. There is a checklist on there. Once you notify your manager your start loosing computer privileges. You will get warnings that you are being watched every time u send an external email or print anything. Eventually it will not let you email attachments or print anything. If you have personal items like pictures to get off the computer so that before notifying manager. This doesn't mean steal, it means collect personal belongings. Furthermore, if you are going to a competitor, take all the personal items from you desk home before notifying. I have seen some escorted without a chance to clean out desk where GE claims they will mail u personal items. In the meantime ur co-workers will pick thru your stuff and GE will forget to send you it's if they send anything.

Sorry but @aho is full of it. At GE you can't write to a flash drive without approval and IT has software on your GE computer that will allow IT to track what you did. Try what he suggests and you could be prosecuted and might even make the evening news. Ask the Chinese engineer at GE Power how emailing himself company data worked out for him.

No matter how badly any company may have treated you, it never justifies stealing or destroying company property. Rise above it, It never hurts to act with integrity.

Copy your files off your PC/Mac to a USB drive, then copy them off that drive onto a second computer. Plug that USB stick back into your GE laptop and then zero out the USB stick. Otherwise, they'll have some bureaucrat hound you to verify you deleted the USB stick's data. FCUK EM

It is really sad to see such hostility toward the company, although certainly some of it is well deserved. There is no reason not to act with decency and professionalism. Don't burn your bridges, it is a surprisingly small world and you may come across some of the same folks in later years, maybe even as your future boss (it happened to me). Listen to @yfv and @mxh, they have it right.

I would check with HR to see if you are eligible for a severance package. Might as well get some cash on the way out if you can.

Give GE the same respect they would give you...NONE. If they were getting rid of you, they would show up with security and escort you off the property.

Your never not free to go. It’s employment at will and you can leave right now if your want. You are not being held hostage and you owe GE nothing.

I don't work for GE, but I did apply for a job in Greenville a few years ago. I had to repeatedly call HR to find out how to get the travel reimbursement that they promised. I guess they were hoping I'd forget about it. I definitely agree that they are already a bankrupt company.

Once you leave you may have to follow up a lot to get all the money GE owes to you...the full and final settlement, gratuity etc. I left 2 months back and I still havent recieved all my money...for me GE is already bankrupt...bankrupt not just due to lack of cash but also due to lack of values and ethics it was once known for!!

All the best my friend...

Leave and don't tell anyone what you know

As the orginal responder indicated it will depend on who your new employer is. In addition to an HR download which may or may not happen, your manager will need your computer, phone, company credit card, RSA token, keys to desk or office. You will be asked if you have any GE proprietary info and reminded of the non-disclosure you signed when you hired in. Otherwise, there is not much too it. If you are leaving on good terms your manager and team should take you out to lunch or a bar but that depends on the consideration of your manager.

Just leave and do not look back is my opinion. Leave with all your knowledge and don’t pass it along is the best option. The place hurt tens of thousands of people. They are heartless greedy people who ran this place in the ground.

If you're going to a competitor, you'll be walked out immediately and your computer activity over the past few months will probably be reviewed. If not, you should be clear to go in two weeks. Expect a lot of people to want to setup meetings with you to "download" what you know. Help out the people who have been helpful to you in the past. Keep rescheduling with the people who have been a pain to you.
