Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Cogswell Workload

Former colleagues still employed: now that you are with Cogswell (or is it Palm Ventures--nothing on their page) what is your workload like? Still 40 to a class? Any humanities or writing faculty--how do you grade so many? Can you? Or is it just no quality, in and out?

who is going to watch 90 minutes videos and how would they even be uploaded? are these people total nuts? LB and DF should make 5 90 minute videos for training purposes.

The 90 minutes comes straight from Burks. She report you to your boss if you do anything less or try to have a conversation to get to know students and build a rapport. A letter of concern is usually put into your file.

My wife has believed for years that DeVry has been doing things like this to encourage people to quit so they won't have to lay people off and pay severance. With Cogswell receiving only 7.5 million to take us, there isn't much room in the budget for severance packages, so they're just seeing how much we will tolerate before we run away screaming.

Wow. Great ideas--if only there were 15, not 50 students. It is nothing less than ABUSE when supervisors require/mandate/insist that unreasonable expectations be met. "Walk through the wall" or risk getting fired when you inevitably fail. You're being set up to fail so that firing can justifiably occur....

  1. Weekly Live Sessions: In the past some of you have offered students virtual connections, tutoring, office hours with mixed attendance by students. Building upon your best practices, we created a formal 90-minute weekly WebEx class structure called ‘Flex Connect’ that students can attend live or download the recording. The 90-minute session includes a traditional instructional lecture focused on challenging course material for the week, opportunity for Q see below for one such quote from a student in Professor Schreibers Math class in November where over one hundred video downloads were watched by students, at an average of 5 views per student.

There is even more insanity:

c. Combining an onsite course with an online section. We are piloting this session; the combining of an onsite class with an online section, thus creating a singular course community and experience for all and allowing the instructor to connect live with all of the students. Training is planned for a larger roll out in March so that students from all modalities can experience an enhanced community.

d. Combining multiple sections of the same course together. Using a Team Teaching approach called the ‘Lead Faculty Model,’ in our current session we are piloting ten courses that have multiple sections combined. The faculty teaching team includes a Lead Faculty member and a cadre of additional professors. Collectively the faculty team engages the students, collaboratively ensures academic quality and consistency, including a weekly live session hosted by the Lead Faculty member.

Closer to 50 per class in January than to 40. Classes are much more complex now with required separate assignments for students that don't attend live lectures.

i don't think the chief overlord of the palmer assoc. has deigned to exert his err... Load onto DU yet. it will be interesting to see how JB shift that Load onto his minions while containing his own sizable bulk in two piece suit.
