You know, as a 20 year veteran on Enbridge mainline my opinion, based on nearly 2 years of exposure, is that the Spectra were completely caught off guard by the pace Enbridge moves at. And this is from somebody who believes the company moves at a phenomenally slow pace. I’m personally losing patience with how long it takes to get Spectra folks to move on anything. And the more groups I meet the more I see it’s endemic. I hate to say it, but the more of the, we peel off, the faster we improve the org.

It’s a big company, so experiences vary. You really need to talk to people in your own team and department to get a flavour for what’s going on and what to expect for the future. For example, The Union Gas and Enbridge Gas Distribution business units will be laying off hundreds of people over the next few months and will be undergoing a painful report process. Other parts of the companies restructured a while ago and might be on the other side of the dark days now.

As a former Spectra person myself, I would also say that us Spectra folks will probably give you a different perspective on things because our former company was much better than Enbridge. We’re the ones complaining the loudest, because we had better benefits, and often better merit and bonuses pre-Enbridge. I find that brand new employees that didn’t know the “old way” are much more positive on the company, and you can see this reflected in employees reviews on sites like Glassdoor and indeed. Maybe you can make the argument Enbridge treats it’s new and less jaded hires better than the old timers too.... I know that’s a tune the old timers like to sing.

Bonuses this year are not bad - at or slightly above target. So if you’re at $100,000 salary at the front line with 10% target it’ll be $10,000.

Merit increase between and 3 and 4 percent are coming in April.

There are positions being posted, new groups being organized... I would tough it out. Look around if your role is in jeopardy. There are places to go.

What was the response you received, about the layoff question, when you took the job?

If you have an option at another company, take it! There is little future and no fun here........

I am a recently hired employee in Houston and I’m freaking out at all the close door meetings. I asked about all the layoffs before I accepted and am now regretting my decision. I’m calling the other company that also offered me a job to see if it’s open. This place is for lunatics. I go to bed wondering what have I done? Any advice if I should “tough it out” like my colleagues say?

My PL told got a couple of us together and suggested we might want to get our resumes updated and keep our eyes open for external opportunities.
