why do you want to bother? Just leave early and enjoy yourself until the new job starts. Unless you need the medical insurance, in which case it makes sense for you to stay and use it as much as possible.

I joined Qualcomm on a Freescale/NXP voluntary layoff. Made money on both ends (signing bonus+severance).

You have to walk a political tightrope to successfully try to get laid off--especially if you've got until July--but it can be done. You have to make clear to them that you don't want to be there, yet at the same time make clear that you're not leaving. Managers don't want an employee who is mentally checked out--especially one who is mentally checked out AND high maintenance. Sometimes companies will offer voluntary layoffs to people who fit that category (look at Amazon). All the while, how do you keep a good reference?

The good news: while you're doing that, you get to have a life. Put in your 40 hours and go home. Professionally develop yourself. Work out.

Its tricky. You can volunteer but I've seen that backfire; once HR gets wind of the fact you want to GTFO they wont lay you off. They'll just wait for you to 'self-lay-off'. Cheaper that way.

You can always have a word with your VP if you are on good ways. But that no sure fire thing. Right now they are working on the late Jan layoff lists. BUT remember they have to ensure that its going to pass legal smell tests. So if the first pass list contains mainly those over 40; THEN the VP/HR are gonna need to find a few much younger for appearances. So if you happen to fall into the demographic they need a few more, then it'll prob work out for you.

Thats why from the outside the criteria of who is on the list appears so random and why we've ended up laying off competent/hard workers with needed skills while we have ever growing powerpoint masters.

The truly crazy thang is how we lay off tons of solid folks and then turn right around and get the agencies to send a bunch of H1B new grads. I guess it keep the average salary way down and lowers the healthcare bill for Q. All those 20s/30s some folks are cheaper to insure and anyway, the temps are all on the c-appy plan at manpower/etc.

I recommend the "tutor" method. Worked well for me.

I think any greed-contrarian path will also lead to the same GTFO result.

Be the most competent person on your team. That seems to mostly get people selected.

the thing to do is act like you really worried about losing your job. Tell your manager and HR that you have a mortgage, kids to feed, sick elderly parents and so....from what I have seen in N this is almost approach is guaranteed to get you RIF'd. The more pitiful personal information you can provide the sooner you will be asked to GTFO.

This is the reverse psychology. Which incidentally HR should know since most have this degree as unable to get real degree requiring math, science or analytical thought.

hope this helps
