Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Layoffs at UG

Last week some really good people were laid off from Union's finance team. Young and older employees were let go but not one peep from HR.

You may want to get everyone's personal contact details before December as there will be many more layoffs coming. Union was a great company to work for. Now that Enbridge has gotten hold of it, they are bent on destroying its culture to prove a point. The lowest common denominator always wins.

Enbridge is not trying to prove a point. What we are all experiencing is the way AM and most of his direct reports on down run the company. It is what it truly is.

More layoffs yet to come in the new year.

Union Gas held its last town hall of the year. The outgoing president made his final address to employees and in it he stated that it was the people he had worked with at UG that made it such a success.

The EVP made her remarks and it was all about the bottom line. Of course she had to show up and there's a reason she's unliked (she should have stayed in Toronto as she's clearly out of her depth). People love working for Union Gas because of its values. When senior leaders talked about respect and integrity they really meant it.

The Enbridge senior leadership is all about how we can screw the last penny of our employees and suppliers. They keep citing safety, integrity and respect but they don't mean it. Just more corporatespeak delivered in a fake voice to demonstrate that they care. They only care if it impacts the bottom line.

Too bad corporate greed will ruin a great company. That's another reason why Enbridge will not make Top Employer because they are not best in class. They had to take over Union Gas to learn about best practices because they had none.

Enbridge will devastate Union Gas and ruin its small town culture. Nothing wil be the same. It's so sad to see such a wonderful place to work just 20 years ago

Now has become a place where employees are viewed as a cost and told they are respected but truly deep down are not by this new company.

Layoffs have definitely happened in Chatham. I think only Shared Services have been affected so far..people who work in Chatham but report into Corporate, not into CH. It's not a secret, but announcements have just been made to the departments impacted. If you ask your people leader, I don't see why they wouldn't tell you what they know, although they may not know much.

Who are all these people being laid off? Is this in Chatham? Is it confidential is that why it is not known to everyone? We’re type of jobs in HR were gotten rid of? I am with Uniongas and seriously have not heard of any lay offs in Chatham, I guess they don’t broadcast them right? Any word on the contact centres or what about all the managers in Customer Care? Way too many of those? Is everyone here guessing and gossiping or does anyone really have some facts?

This is the reality already for many ordinary workers not only in UG. I have been both a contractor and employee and there is no job security on either. The only difference is you have a severance package if you are an employee but it is not a lot if you are only with the company for few years. If you survive the cuts, you have to be really good at making your manager or director look good. Since I started I was told that everyone is replacable and disposable and that is what stuck on my mind all these years. While it is true, I hope it also applies more often to directors and up and not only to ordinary workers. One wrong email or gesture to your management and it might end your career or whatever you call your work at ENB. Some days you can’t help but feel small and useless. Realistically, you can’t really do anything with all the reorgs and cuts because this is business and it supposed to generate money and management mandate is to make whatever is possible to save the bottom line. It is especially hard for merger or acquisitions because one combined company cannot simply sustain the manpower. While many had already left on their own and many are just waiting to be packaged out, the messaging from the top doesn’t change, that is - you are replacable and they can always hire a better fit, probably for a less amount of money. If you are expecting to be valued or at least respected, I don’t think this is the right place for you. Employment is always at will and you can leave anytime you want but companies are more succesful if they care about their workforce. The oil price is low and a lot of other things within the economy that makes the industry even more tough but management shouldn’t make it even more harder by making the people feel that you are but a disposable tool. It is easy to talk like you own your subordinates if you are on a higher position and some workers will say anything to please the management so they can survive. If you are still with ENB and you feel like you are drowning, you have to tap into your support system outside work like your family and friends. Distract yourself by exercising or doing some other meaningful activities outside work. Start looking for work somewhere too. Take care of yourself, you only have one life.

Unfortunately this is what Enbridge does. Nobody should be surprised by now.
