After all the town halls promising that plenty of work is on the horizon, scada leadership treats us like we are non energized and disinterested. Now there is a rumor that projects and parts of the department are going to be sourced and gutted down to a skeleton crew.

I wasn't referring to you. If you have been in this site long enough, the IP guy is the self-important fellow who thinks he or his group is the most valuable asset Enbridge has ever had. Some think he is just a troll but he has interesting posts that border on comedic thus the taunting question.
“IP guy?” I don’t know the term. And I’m not certain what you think I should be thinking about.
Every time we touch a large external vendor of “commoditized” systems we get burned. This is not lost on those in the hot seat today. Accenture would have to dramatically ramp up their game to be considered for supporting SCADA. They would be laughed out of the room today.
I can hit 10 stellar technical folks with a rock from my desk. And the thing is, despite being relatively expensive they are still here. That’s because current leadership understands their value.
People here want to paint managers with this blanket brush of ineptitude bordering on infantile. It’s ridiculous. Worse, it’s propaganda behaviour, no different than ethnic abuse during the world wars, or union behaviour during labour conflicts. Dehumanized your target. It’s not right, in the moral or logical sense.
I’ve been two decades with the company, and I’m expensive compared to my peers. Yet somehow, being right in the first tranche of sourcing with Accenture, I’m still here. How did the bean counters miss me?
Maybe because counting beans might not be the whole story? Naw... couldn’t be that. That would defy the narrative.
"Of all areas this is the one I would worry least about sourcing. Virtually everything else goes first."
What do you think of this, Mr. IP guy ?
“Post implementation however i can see them whoring out to Accenture.”
I’m at ground zero of the Accenture engagement, and I eat lunch with the SRP folks most days. I’m side by side with them on the floor. I know their leadership very well.
At this time there is exactly zero appetite for sourcing SCADA. Nor for “order to cash”, the applications that are truly different than anything industry has. We tried, and got burned for $300 million before failing.
And yes, SRP is easily 4 more years before implementation is complete, and success is not guaranteed even then.
There is no company to which we can just write a cheque and buy our SCADA future.
Of all areas this is the one I would worry least about sourcing. Virtually everything else goes first.
Heard from the grapevine that “SRP” project had been going on for at least 4 years now and some parts are already running in parallel with the existing system and it might not be very long until it is clear that the new one is more robust and won’t need as much manpower as the old one. To the management the original post seems like rumor and someone is stirring the pot but for ordinary workers the psychological impact of the post is not good either. In general and regardless if people visit this site or not, heard stories of ordinary workers not getting enough sleep, cannot focus at work, don’t trust the management, hide their grief in front of bosses, secretly looking for work outside and wanting to leave if there is anything better. In reality there is really no guarantee of job security wherever you go and it is hard to leave the place where you thought you can build a career and retire. If the inevitable happens, be prepared by saving as much as you can, build connections outside coz this business is all about money. Not everyone makes millions and in case of being kicked out also gets millions. The reality is sad but help yourself by focusing on your real family and friends outside of work. There is no easy answer to everything but things gets lighter when you have a good support system. While the job supports yourself and family, don’t forget that you work so you and your family can live better. There is life outside work and you can still find another one in case it happens.
Ask DS what companies he’s looking at, he’s been looking at vendors. He’ll never admit but it’s worth a try to ask.
Hard to say but doubt it. Not aware of any of the big 'body' shops having any SCADA expertise to help the larger O&G companies out with.
I doubt if they do anything right now regardless. Edmonton is just kicking off SRP (SCADA Replacement Plan) and that will be a 4-5 year endeavor. Post implementation however i can see them whoring out to Accenture.
Ok...sourcing aka outsourcing for perhaps basic typical IT services would be considered on shore or off shore but can't see SCADA services. No on shore or off shore SCADA sourcing partners to speak of or it would be done all over industry. Who's outsourcing SCADA services and to which company?
India
So where are these jobs being sourced out to?
https://www.k-international.com/blog/countries-with-the-most-english-speakers/
sourced like out sourced to non english speaking offshore is tried and true failure of magnitudes... not hard to google the cost savings expected results in cost increases confusion and general garbage.
If Enbridge was looking to source SCADA services, wouldn't they have done it years ago? By the way, who would they even source SCADA services to? Pretty limited skillsets in this space and no boanfide sourcing companies with these skills you could source to anyways. Whoever is posting this garbage is just trying to stir sh*t up.
You mean like the kind of coward that terminated someone forgot to notify them, then that poor soul shows up the next morning only to find out there badge doesn’t work. And then let’s some one else go down to break the news !?!
I have no idea what this cat fight is about, but it should be moved to “Open Mic” on Yammer lol 🎤
Scada should have been out sourced 20 years ago.
