As an employee at least for me, the GE stock has been a good trade. You just got to know when to get in and out.

I joined 2004 and began adding GE stock in the S&SP in 2005 and got out in late 2007 before the market dropped. I got back in late 2008 when it was in the single digits and then got out in late 2015 at about $30.

The S&SP / 401K is like any other investment. Everyone needs to measure it and understand what is going on. Follow the statement of cash flows and the balance sheet not just the headline income statement. Ignore public news and do your own financial analysis exactly like you would do for any other asset.

Only by understanding the debt values from the balance sheet and the cash flow walk was I able to understand when to exit GE along with a good understanding of overall business cycles and maker risks like those that caused the 2008 drop.
