Thread regarding Viacom Inc. layoffs

When you can’t beat them, join them- Viacom partners with Netflix

I can’t believe that I’m going to say it, but for once I agree with Bob Bakish. The ship to the streaming business has sailed for us a long time ago and it would be unwise to try to get into it directly, now that Netflix is dominating, and a couple of other giants are well on their way of launching similar concepts. On the other hand, it would be stupid to ignore these streaming services, cause chances are they will be a dominate (if not the only) platform for all media in the near future. So the only thing we can do is cooperate with them, stay in the game, and wait for a potential opportunity to emerge. Just to be clear, I’m not saying this is necessarily a good move, but rather a lesser than two evils.

Younger people are moving to streaming in droves, Bakish knows this. He is doing what is necessary to keep the company going forward. Cable ratings are down in the gutter and Dish and DirecTv have made their own SVOD services to compete/stay relevant, and in the coming years other cablers will most likely do the same. You have to evolve in this industry and be mobile to changes.
