I know we haven't seen any major layoffs for a few months now, but I think it's far too early to become optimistic.
We're nowhere close to originally announced savings, and I'm afraid that it's just a matter of time before anther major layoffs announcement comes our way.
I hope I'm wrong, but the chances are I'm not.

Funny you should mention this. I call it AGE. Acceptable Geriatric Employee. If you aren't dragging things down you can stay for awhile.
The last full EER was offered in Feb 2012. That is more than 6.5 years ago. The one offered in 2014 prior to the split was no EER at all - it was a lame offer. There is a saying that HP offers a real EER every 6 years or so. Si it is overdue. Time will tell.

I don't know. Back before the split I recall there being an early retirement carrot dangled and many people I know took it, the rationale being that if you didn't that you would probably get laid off anyway, and with fewer goodies.

You are basically home free. You don't have a new CEO implement Paying for Continuing Education with 6-months of his tenure with imminent layoffs looming.

I put in about 30 hours per week, get 12 paid holidays, five weeks of FTO, and a great buy on health insurance. And those old RP and DPSP pension plans, coupled with my 401k, are sitting right at 7 figures. But why should I tap into those? Easy street is hard to exit.
So don’t count on retirement incentives to weed us out. Rather, the younger, naive rookies will hit the pavement. They have plenty of years left to rebuild.
Management has 3 (THREE!!!) go-rounds of planning, of slicing and dicing upcoming layoffs (who gets laid off and where, what groups and sites). I am not at all sure if that includes the traditional "Black October" festivities upcoming very shortly... If so, I doubt that they will be big (October 2018). Come 2019, though, I bet they will! They'd don't schedule 3 iterations of planning these sorts of things, if they are going to lay off a mere 10 or 20 "productivity units".

instead of layoffs which draws lots of negative press, I think they might offer less traumatic exists such as early retirement offers to get the older folks out of the company.
